Old Jeans

Old Jeans

You remember that pair of jeans you outgrew? Yes, the very same ones that you love so much but they are just too small for you. That comfy, faded pair that was perfect on any day. It is going to be in your wardrobe forever, even though you know that you are never going to wear it again. Damn! If only you could snuggle back into it, feel it’s warm denim pulse on your legs. If only you could slip back into that feeling of familiarity, of knowing where every stitch meets the next. If only.

But that ‘if’ never comes. Ever.

You wait. You long. Pray, hope, plead, curse. Nothing works. You just outgrow that sense of knowing. It is not because you want to. But you have to. And it is not like you have a better choice, rather, a choice at all. If you do not realize that the jeans are biting into your skin, it is going to be too late. They are going to leave scarring rashes. You will forget how comfortable they once were, only the bruises stay fresh. So I am going to fold that favorite pair and keep it safely away. The joy of looking at it occasionally; feeling the stiff, warm fabric against my bare hands; sharing that silent you-are-special hug. At least that will remain. A little something to look forward to.

If only we could “never age nor fade nor die”, for the other. If only.
